About Newnan Georgia Newnan became a city in 1828. It was named after General Daniel Newnan, a Georgia Secretary of State and United States Congressman; General Newnan never set foot in Newnan, Georgia! Newnan is known as “the City of Homes” because many historic homes still line the city streets; the city was spared the ravages of the Civil War due to the fact that houses, churches, and the courthouse all served as hospitals. There is an abundance of history and modern day events to be discovered in Newnan Georgia. Located just minutes from I-85, it's centrally located and very suited to provide what you've been looking for. Visit our fair city today! Newnan Georgia is one of a hand full of small towns that have grasped the old culture and kept it alive as is evident in the area surrounding the Coweta County Court Square. Just up the road from the old time settings of the court house is one of Georgia's premier shopping and entertainment areas. Newnan offers a wide variety of shopping and restaurant areas on Bullsboro Road, just off of I-85 at Exit #51.
